Here's just a snatch of a story that was floating around in my head yesterday. Hope y'all enjoy!
I stared at her, jaw clenched, my eyes grim, staring directly into her own laughing ones.
"What have we here?" She smirked.
I pressed my lips together resentfully.
"Oh have you forgotten how to speak?" She cocked her eyebrow. "Funny, there was a time you never shut up."
I remained silent.
She rose to her feet effortlessly, her blonde curls falling down her back, her confident smirk torturing me. Her long, graceful fingers rested on the hilt of her dagger, tracing patterns as she considered what to do with me. Though knowing her, she'd probably planned for this little situation months ago.
"My boys," she said, gesturing to the sailor boys working at the mast of her ship "made me aware of your presence simply ages ago. You must have thought yourself so clever didn't you? But then, you always thought yourself clever." She paced around me, prowling like a lioness prepared to pounce "A word tinker... That's what you used to call yourself. You could work magic in your pretty words. You could convince a blind man that he had sight, talk someone into walking straight into the arms of death, herald fate like a siren leading sailors astray..." She knelt down and looked into my eyes, the twinkle gone. "You could take a heart and make it all your own."
I leaned against the rail and simply looked at her, knowing exactly what she was referring to.
She tilted her head to the side, as if she were an eagle. "But I have not allowed you into my waters so that we might discuss pasted chapters in dusty old books. No, my dear Peter, I have brought you back for a simple reason. I have found a good use for your... Talent."
I sighed and rolled my shoulders thoughtfully. "I have but one question for you then."
She smiled a humorless sort of smile. "It ought to be a good one, for each word I am tempted to simply count as a waste of oxygen."
I leaned forward, one corner of my mouth going up. "How do you know I can't take your heart again?"
She brought her face closer to mine, until the tips are noses were only centimeters away from touching. "Thanks to you..." She whispered "I no longer have a heart."
